The River and The Great Smoky Mountains
The French Broad River is the third oldest river in the
world, according to our beloved scientists (we’ll take their word for
it). It begins in the Highlands area in North Carolina and travels North
(yes North) until it reaches Ashville NC, where it turns West and travels
into
Tennessee through The Great Smoky Mountains, where it joins the Holston
River to form the Tennessee River. Of course as it travels from Ashville
to Newport TN, it creates one of the most beautiful river valleys and
outdoor adventurer places ever created, all at the foot of the Smoky Mountains.
The Smoky Mountains name originated with the Cherokees who named it this
because of the natural mist that rose usually after rain or early in the
morning. In the early part of this century, The Great Smokies became a
National Park and has since become the most visited park in the nation.
This could not have been achieved without the help of many individuals
and the States of Tennessee and North Carolina. Without their efforts,
the Smokies could never have become what it is today, the only National
Park you can visit for free. (See discover the French Broad Backroads
in the June 1997 Blue Ridge Magazine article)
