In the late 1800s many east coasters and Europeans were drawn to the simple life style pioneers discovered out West. Despite the West's great expanse, the influx of travelers at the time outnumbered available accommodations.

Consequently, cattle and horse ranchers were inundated with requests by friends and relatives to put them up, sometimes even for several months. At first this was just an exchange of hospitality but soon these guests began offering money to their hosts, and thus began the dude ranching enterprise--dude being a turn-of-the-century expression for strangers in a new land.

Though many dude ranches today allow guests to participate in chores like cattle driving, inoculating, and branding, the majority do not require their guests to work. "Even on working cattle ranches, you can do as much or as little as you want to. Horseback riding, cattle roundups, great chow and great people make for an experience your family will enjoy and share for a lifetime.
